CHARACTERISTICS OF INSTITUTION Founded in 1884, St. John's Northwestern Military Academy is a private, college-preparatory, military boarding school for boys in grades seven through twelve. Students of the Academy receive excellent academic instruction in an encouraging and positive environment. The academic curriculum consists of a broad range of college-preparatory courses (including Honors classes) designed to challenge the students and inspire them to pursue college education. One hundred percent of graduates from the Academy are accepted to college. St. John's Northwestern’s faculty and staff members are all passionate and professional individuals devoted to ensuring that all cadets receive quality education and a memorable learning experience throughout their time with the Academy. To guarantee students receive personal attention and academic assistance, class sizes are small, mandatory study hours are assigned daily, and optional tutorials are available daily. In addition to academic excellence, the Academy emphasizes the development of the entire individual, including his mind, body, spirit, personal values, and leadership abilities. Each cadet is trained to be responsible for himself, his classmates, his campus, and his community. The Academy offers several sports in which students are encouraged to participate such as football, hockey, wrestling, cross-country, rugby, and basketball. Health services, personal counseling, immigration assistance, and religious services are also available. The Academy schedules two academic semesters. First Semester, from early September through January, and Second Semester, from early February through early June. St. John's Northwestern Military Academy Diploma St. John's Nothwestern’s academic curriculum is designed to comprehensively and thoroughly prepare cadets for college-level academic studies. Cadets attend seven periods of classes each day, five days a week. A tutorial period is assigned in the morning before classes begin, and after-school assistance is also available. Mandatory two-hour study halls are conducted every night Sunday through Thursday. All applicants must take the cadet entrance examination or the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) in order to enroll. For more information regarding the SSAT, please visit www.ssat.org. In order to receive a St. John's Northwestern Military Academy diploma, all cadets must successfully complete all assigned coursework. Each student is expected to excel in a college-preparatory curriculum and actively develop his academic, athletic, and leadership skills. APPLICATION MATERIALS REQUESTED
The Academy offers open enrollment. However, all interested students are asked to schedule a visit to the Academy before enrolling. During the visit, students are administered the cadet entrance examination (if he has not completed the SSAT) and are interviewed by an academic advisor. International students are encouraged to visit the Academy as far in advance of the planned entry date as possible to allow time for examination and application processing and other enrollment arrangements. Approximately 35 faculty members An English as a Second Language (ESL) Camp is available in the summer to students age 12 through 16 who are interested in developing basic English language skills in order to successfully pass the cadet entrance examination. Each International student is paired with an English-speaking roommate. In addition to helping students advance in language areas such as reading, speaking, and listening, the program focuses on personal growth in leadership, cooperation, and personal responsibility. Students are also familiarized with American culture through a number of adventures including climbing, archery and water survival skills, as well as off-campus excursions such as trips to baseball games and museums. Students who successfully complete the program and pass the entrance exam are welcome to enroll in the Academy. The ESL Summer Camp is three weeks long. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SERVICES DEPARTMENT Services to St. John's Northwestern Military Academy students include academic advising, tutoring, career planning, testing services, personal counseling, a variety of athletic facilities, health services, and on-campus housing. The faculty and administration of St. John's Northwestern Military Academy provide support and assistance in all matters of importance to international students. Students live in on-campus residence halls. Two cadets (of the same age) are assigned to each barracks room, which is furnished with two desks, two beds and two computers. Thirty to fifty cadets live on each dormitory floor, which is supervised by a TAC Officer. The TAC Officer is available to provide counseling and assistance in a number of areas to all floor residents. Climate: The climate in Delafield is seasonal. Temperatures range from 20 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 - 26 degrees Celsius). Autumns and winters can be quite cold; rainfall is common and snowfall occurs occasionally. The climate in the spring and the summer is pleasantly sunny and warm with a slight breeze. Estimated total academic fees for one full year of attendance at the Academy is $27,250 (including tuition, room and board, laundry services, haircuts, uniform fees, books, and computer fees), with an additional $2,000 supplies fee required for all new students.
