Texas Southmost College, a public community college founded in 1926, and The University of Texas at Brownsville, a state-supported University, entered into partnership in 1991 to provide expanding educational opportunities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and the state of Texas. Today, the two public, comprehensive, coeducational institutions offer more than 30 major subjects with a wide selection of academic and technical/occupational courses to a diverse, multi-cultural student body. Associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degrees, as well as certificates of completion, are awarded. Programs of study are supplemented by a broad range of supportive services including orientation for new students, academic advising, personal counseling, career planning and advisement, health services, and on-campus residence housing. The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College also offer many opportunities for extracurricular participation including academic organizations, special interest clubs, cultural organizations, music and drama groups, honor societies, and student media. There is an active International Student Organization sponsoring events and activities for the entire student body. Intercollegiate and intramural sports are scheduled for both men and women students. The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College campus is located at the southernmost tip of the state of Texas in the lush, semitropical city of Brownsville, one block form its sister city of Matamoros, Mexico. The Rancho del Cielo Biology Station, located 70 miles south of Ciudad Victoria in Tamulipas, Mexico, attracts scientists from around the world and welcomes University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College students.

The University and College schedule a Fall Semester (late August through mid-December); Spring Semester (mid-January through early May); and Summer Sessions I and II (early July through early August).

None. Students are tested upon admission for placement in the appropriate study levels. Students whose primary language is not English are tested with an English Proficiency Test for appropriate placement.

All incoming undergraduate students must take a state-approved exam to comply with the Texas Success Initiative prior to course registration. Tests recommended to be taken in home country in order to be exempt from Texas mandated examination for first-time freshman:

1. SAT Combined score of 1070 or higher with a minimum of 500 in both Verbal and Math.

2. ACT Composite score of 23 or higher with a minimum of 19 in both English and Math.

Graduate Admissions: 3.0 grade point average in undergraduate coursework, satisfactory scores in GRE or GMAT

Students must successfully complete all assigned coursework and earn the required number of credits as specified by the chosen major field, with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and a 3.0 with a Master’s degree.

None. However, international students are encouraged to apply as far in advance of the desired entry date as possible to allow ample time for application processing, immigration documents, and housing arrangements.

Spouses of University of Texas of Brownsville and Texas Southmost College students are welcome to attend classes if they meet all admission and financial requirements.

On-campus facilities are available

The faculty and administration of The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College provide support and assistance in all matters of importance to international students. In addition, student services are provided by an experienced counselor.

There is an active International Student organization sponsoring events and activities for the entire student body.

On-campus student housing includes computer laboratories, wireless web access, a work out room, and on-site laundry facilities. The coeducational residence community features all-male and all-female living sections with double and single occupancy accommodations.

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College campus is located at the southernmost tip of Texas, in the city of Brownsville. The city enjoys warm, semitropical temperatures throughout the year. The campus, which is situated on the historic grounds of Fort Brown, is just a block from Brownsville's sister city of Matamoros Mexico, and twenty miles from the popular resort of South Padre Island. Complete administrative, academic, laboratory, workshop, housing, student service and recreational facilities comprise the campus.
