CHARACTERISTICS OF INSTITUTIONFounded in 1967, the University of South Carolina, Upstate (USC Upstate) is a public, comprehensive, multi-purpose, co-educational institution. USC Upstate offers bachelor's degree programs in the liberal arts, sciences, business administration, nursing, and teacher education; and master's degrees in education. Special programs offered by the University include pre-professional programs; internships, providing valuable work experience relating to the student's chosen major; a Three-Year Degree program and Three Plus One program; and ROTC. All University of South Carolina, Upstate students benefit from a variety of supportive services including orientation for new students, academic advising, personal counseling, professional preparation, health services, child care, and on campus housing and meals. The Office of International Studies provides assistance in matters of specific importance to international students attending the University. USC Upstate students participate in academic and honorary organizations, campus activities, campus media, performing groups. and cultural arts programs. Intercollegiate athletics and intramural sports are scheduled for both men and women students. The University of South Carolina, Upstate is located near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on a 314-acre campus. As a metropolitan university, USC Upstate maintains strong partnerships with members of the surrounding community including school districts, business, industry, and health care institutions. CALENDARThe University of South Carolina, Upstate schedules a Fall Semester (mid-August through early December); Spring Semester (early January through early May); Maymester (throughout May); and Summer Session I and II (late May through mid-August). In addition, a minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) I score of 850 is required. DEGREE REQUIREMENTSStudents must complete all assigned coursework and earn the appropriate number of credits with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 to graduate. PERCENTAGE OF SINGLE AND MARRIEDSingle: 91% CHILD CARE FACILITIESChildren from three months to six years may be enrolled at the University's Burroughs Child Development Center. Fees are based on a sliding scale. Full-and-part time care is available. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SERVICES DEPARTMENTThe faculty and administration of the University of South Carolina, Upstate provide support and assistance in all matters of importance to international students. HOUSINGUSC Upstate offers two housing options. University Commons is an on-campus, apartment complex for upperclassmen, accommodating four students in each two-bedroom, two-bath unit. All units offer living/dining room, kitchen area, and Internet access. Palmetto House, a new resident facility for freshmen, consists of single and double occupancy rooms, open areas, and laundry facilities. This co-educational facility features controlled access, full sprinkler system, and Internet access. CLIMATE & GEOGRAPHYClimate: Temperate foothills climate. Summer highs average in the upper 80s. Winter lows average in the mid-30s, highs in the mid-50s. Geography : The USC Upstate campus is located near the foothills of the Blue ridge Mountains in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The 314-acre campus has 10 major buildings, The Louis P. Howell Athletic Complex, and a 12-acre arboretum.
